Fancy a Book-Swap?

All sorts of experimentation today... I do apologise if it doesn't work.

Fancy a Book-Swap?

I was wandering into Arcadia, one of my favourite shops in Oxford and one which is mentioned here, and bought a little Penguin paperback, with anticipation of its being sought after with my readers on this blog. And, if you'd like it, leave a comment - or email simondavidthomas@yahoo.co.uk - and I'll make a little draw. To make it fun and reciprocal, all I ask is a paperback-swap i.e. send me anything at all that you think I might want to read, even if it only cost 5p! How's that for a deal?

But what is the book I'm offering, you ask? Well... it's probably got more mention than any other on Stuck-in-a-Book, and is one of my very favourite novels. The video will give the rest away. It took me an age to get it to work, and then I forgot that videos will show you a shot from the middle as their default screen, which rather removed the mystery. But humour me, and play it anyway. I've put a gap in the blog to extend the surprise... If the video fails, then your answer can also be found here.

Tempted?! Remember, just comment or email, then the winner can have a paperback exchange with me.

  1. Oh, and you're a "techie" too! A video - good going. For some reason videos just do not play on my computer. Either nothing happens, or a pop-up states something about Windows, or, at best, it comes in widely separated spurts. _But_, I can see that you have acquired _Miss Hargreaves_! Lucky you!

Put my name in the hat for your "draw" - and I'll start searching now for a very suitable swap. :-)

  2. I think book swapping is a great idea, especially with an element of the unknown about it. I haven't read 'Miss Hargreaves' so I'd love to try to come up with a surprise swap for you. Count me in, please.

  3. If you don't mind a UK-US swap, I'd love to be considered. I've been searching for Miss Hargreaves since you posted about it, but I haven't found anything affordable. I have several books that I think you would like--maybe there's an early 20th-century American writer that's hard to find in the UK.

  4. Thanks for the link in this post to your Oxford tours - I only caught up with your blog in August and so missed tours 1 and 2 - both delightful! The sensation, looking at the photographs, was the same as that about a month ago when I took my 17 year old son up to an Oxford open day. I looked around the city thinking 'but didn't I only leave here a year or two ago myself?'
    I'm clearly losing my grip.
Also, while I'm on the thanks, I've been meaning to thank you, since I subscribed to SiaB, for reminding me about the Provincial Lady. Some of the funniest writing ever...

  5. What a wonderful idea Simon.I have been looking for Miss Hargreaves in secondhand bookshops since you mentioned it here - thus far without success. I would love to be included. I am sure I can find an interesting paperback or two here in Oz for you - they might have been published in England to begin with though:)

  6. If you haven't already drawn names, and if you'd be willing to do a US/UK trade, please drop my name in the bowl. I don't think I've even seen Penguins with that particular design over here. And of course the book is on my wishlist, as I have seen it mentioned here at with the Doves. I am going to have to try harder to locate a copy...

  8. I bought a 2nd hand copy of this on your recommendation and it was one of the most boring and silly books I have ever read.

  10. If I'm not too late could I be added too, please? I have heard so much about this book (mainly from Simon ;-) )and have never seen a copy anywhere.

Congratulations on your directorial début. I am awestruck at the breadth of your talents. It's all I can do to manipulate Hotmail. (Or does it manipulate me?...)
