Over With The Foxes

(found on etsy)

I think Over With The Foxes would make a great book title... *jots down in notebook* but that's not why I've written it in my subject line.

I'm sure you all know the good people of Vulpes Libris - a collaborative blog, where the 'book foxes' (see what they did there? LATIN) write about all manner of things bookish, from classics to erotica and everything in between.

I was very flattered, of course, when they got in touch recently and asked if they could reblog some of my posts.  Well, said I, I'd rather write some for you - is that ok?  (You see, so often my posts bleed into one another, or rely on some sort of familiarity with other aspects of Stuck-in-a-Book - which would be an appalling marketing strategy, if I were doing this professionally - that I thought reblogs would feel quite strange.)  Luckily, they were more than happy for me to write just for them!

So, about once a month, that's what I'll be doing.  My first piece is up now, and it's about my favourite books.  It probably won't include any huge surprises for any of you...

  1. Hurrah! I'll look forward to reading your pieces there.

And Over with the Foxes would make a great title, though it makes me think of the Rabbits: please write a book full of short scenes about the Rabbits' modern-day counterparts, the Foxes. Because clearly you don't have enough already on your plate ;)

  3. "classics to erotica"

Do you think they are really opposite ends of a spectrum?

    1. I thought you might comment on that!
Briefly... yes, I do. But of course it depends which spectrum you're using. Not the one of 'literary ability', but... yes, on some spectra.

    2. I'm just too predictable I see. Perhaps I can change your mind one day?

  4. Hi, I have been reading your blog for months now, and really enjoy your reviews and book recommendations. In fact, you are responsible for many of the books I have bought in the past year. I'm glad to hear that 'Sense and Sensibility'is your favourite Austen--It's mine too, though I am planning to reread 'Persuasion' soon. I like 'Pride and Prejudice', and always enjoy returning to Emma and Mr. Knightley, but there is something about Eleanor's strength of character that makes this book the best for me. And I have visited so many book shops and websites here in India hoping to find a copy of Provincial Lady, but have always been bitterly disappointed. Your post about your multiple Provincial Lady copies left me quite jealous :) I've acquired a lot of great books on your recommendation. Keep up the good work! -- Sharanya

    1. Thanks so much for your comment Sharanya, it's lovely to hear from you! And lovely also to have you on my side about Sense and Sensibility.

So sorry that you've not managed to track down the Provincial Lady yet - but good luck in finding her!

  7. I’m sure it’s going to be awfully fun, Simon. I love your interview with yourself. I came across Vulpes Libris in the past but I’m sure I’ll be visiting it on a regular basis now.

    1. Great! I did have fun writing it - I didn't know I'd be interviewing myself until I started doing it...

  8. Your post was wonderful and funny...just what I have come to expect from you. I was surprised at the inclusion of Sense & Sensibility, however. Not because it is Austen (and BTW I am with you on not loving Persuasion and Mansfield Park, but the day may come when I change my mind too). Rather, I would have thought you would have included Edith Oliver’s The Love Child...along with DoaPL and Miss Hargreaves.

    1. Thank you Ruthiella! And, oh, picking three is so hard! If I had to pick five, I think The Love Child would be there (but then so many other titles should be too! It's difficult...)

  9. Very nice! I finally got around to the Provincial Lady, and loved every word as you predicted that I would. My girls have a book club with their friends, but we've decided to have a "family book club" with "just us girls" -- our first selection is Miss Hargreaves. I can't wait to see what they think of her. :)

I love, love, love the idea of you all reading Miss Hargreaves together! Do report back on what the girls think...
