Hope you enjoyed that, and well done ramblingfancy, who more or less got the right answer - Return of the Native is the odd one out, for reasons which will become clear when you see the books' opening lines...

'Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote' - The Canterbury Tales

'A Saturday afternoon in November[...]' - The Return of the Native

'April is the cruellest month' - The Waste Land

'It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen' - Ninety Eighty-Four

Thanks for all your ingenious guesses!

  1. Oh wow it was that, and I did actually *know* they were first lines. Thanks for sharing the question Simon!

  2. So "obvious!" ;)
    Fun question, though!

  3. Ugh, that is obvious XD I think I need to read a few more books to get these questions in the future.

  4. Yes, perhaps 'obvious' wasn't the right word - I meant it's an obvious thing to look for, rather than it's something we all know off by heart!

  5. I missed your quiz! I will be looking out for more as I love book related trivia!

  6. Well, I was totally off! I was going with the "there's 'the' in the title," but such was not the case.

    That was fun, though!

I've now moved to, and all my old posts are over there too - do come and say hello :)
