Cold Comfort Farm : Thoughts?
I am more exhausted than I can express - not sure I have fully recuperated - and have only energy for a sentence or two... I've just re-read Cold Comfort Farm and had Book Group on it, but before I tell you what I thought... what do you think??
Let me know, then I'll see how we match up...
It's been a long while since I read it, but I seem to recall it was Austen's Emma but written from a pig sty. Lots of sexy, brooding, rustic men, the maternal urge to Tidy Up writ large and a very idyllic wedding scene at the end. That's all I have, I'm afraid.
ReplyDeleteI think that's the best cover I've ever seen. What a cow! Moo!
ReplyDeleteSorry, I haven't actually read the book, but I do own it. Largely because of the cow.
I will get round to it soon, I promise.
I love it!! It's quite mad, very funny and unlike anything else I can think of, but it has survived many re-readings by me and is a real favourite.
ReplyDeleteI recommended CCF for a book group a while ago and was thoroughly embarrassed by my choice. I found it drear, trite and full of ridiculous situations and characters.
ReplyDeleteIf Gibbons's intention was to write a cartoon of a book, she succeeded, but I don't think it was. CCF did not engage me (and being engaged by a book is essential to me). I only finished it out of a sense of duty to the bookgroup, and because I had had the idiotic notion that finding out what the 'something bad in the woodshed' was, would make a good read.
One of the funniest books ever written, IMO.
ReplyDeleteIt is wonderfully funny but I bet it does not bear much tearing apart in discussion - bit like explaning a joke makes it go flat. One to be enjoyed on your own about once every five years, or if you have just read anything by Mary Webb or Thomas Hardy!
ReplyDeleteI love it and actually thought that the TV version done some years ago now, though a bit thin, did it almost justice. The sight of Ian McKellan quivering is not one to be missed. However, if you ever do manage to find any of her other books, beware, they are very poor by comparison.
ReplyDeleteThis book came to me, highly recommended, so I pursued it even though I wasn't finding it funny at all, I thought there must be something wrong with my sense of humour, but I found it rather unkind, perhaps I was just feeling extra sensitive at the time.C.B.
