Perfect reading for a cold...

... I'm feeling sorry for myself on the sofa today, and needed something with big print, non-challenging words, and general jolliness.  Would you believe I've never read this?

And what a lovely copy, which came courtesy of Vintage Books a couple of years ago (oops).

  2. Sorry you're under the weather, Simon. I confess I've never read Ransome either - will be interested to hear what you think of it!

  3. Feel better soon. I was also late to S&A. There's a certain anthropological enjoyment to be had.

  6. So sorry you're not feeling well, Simon. I was down all last week with a bad cold, a thing which seemed particularly cruel when the weather outside was so nice and spring-like here. Enjoy Swallows and Amazons! I love the beginning of it but I always felt so inspired when reading it as a child to go out and have my own adventures that I'm not totally sure I ever made it to the end...

  7. Of course I believe you have not read it! I think you will enjoy it, though it is not my favourite of the series. I re-read them as an adult when my son was about 8. I hope you recover rapidly.

  8. Oh, I hope your illness is just enough to keep you on the couch, but allowing you to read painlessly. The thing about a nice unchallenging book when you're sick is that you can drift in and out of sleep and not lose track of the tale.

  9. It's hard for me to feel sorry for someone who's stuck on the sofa reading a book. That's one of my favorite pass times. ;-)

    Get well soon.

  11. I only read S&A last year too so you're no later to the game than many of us. It was still a fun read and I'm glad that I got to it later rather than never. I do love that cover -- I might have to seek it out!

  12. The idea of being off work with a cold and loafing around with a book (legally) sounds wonderful until the real thing comes along...then it's misery. I've never read that book either but you lot in England seem to get the best Vintage editions! Get well soon, Simon.

  13. Simon, you made an excellent get well decision. (Sorry to hear you're under the weather.)
During a lengthy recuperation years ago, I re-read Little Women, Little Men and several Nancy Drew mysteries. Just enough mental stimulation and quite soothing.

  14. I came to these for the first time as I read them aloud to my kids. We got a little bogged down with some of the sailing terminology (since we know nothing about sailing), but that didn't keep us from enjoying the whole series. They became some of our favorites and gave us lots of fun memories together. Enjoy - and hope you are feeling better!
