Musical Musing

Karen at Cornflower has set people a music challenge - list/upload their five favourite songs beginning with a letter which she pulls out of a Scrabble bag. Sounds like fun, does it not, and my letter was... P.

Now, there's very little guarantee that shared book tastes lead to shared music tastes, especially since I hardly ever listen to classical music, and never opera, and am probably rather alone in that in terms of bloggers. But I thought I'd give it a go nonetheless. Some of my favourites don't appear to be on YouTube (like Papercut Words by Elin Sigvardsson and Peace by Jennifer Knapp) so I limited to those for which I could find videos... some of these aren't official videos but fan-made ones, so apologies if they're a bit weird. Anyway, it was tricky but... here we go! If you want to have a go yourself, go to Karen's post here.

1.) The Part Where You Let Go - Hem
(I thought I'd apply the articles-don't-count rule beloved by libraries everywhere)

2.) Protection - Massive Attack ft. Tracey Thorn

3.) Pretty Good Year - Tori Amos

4.) Paper Cup - Heather Nova

5.) Praise, My Soul, The King of Heaven

  1. Articles don't count, eh? If I'd known that I'd have had The Hippopotamus Song in my 'H' list!

  4. Simon, I have changed my mind, I love the song by Hem and of course there is the Tracey Thorn. They are all just so beautiful. Simon it is bad enough that you recommend all of these books now you are recommending incredibly beautiful CDs; you will have to stop or I should have shares in Amazon! Only kidding of course. Keep up the good work.

  5. Karen and Peter - SURELY the Library of Congress rules apply? ;-)

Jennifer Dee - I'm so pleased you like them, I hoped someone would, although I only expect one or two people to share my taste. I think that's my favourite song by Hem, but in terms of album I recommend the very beautiful Eveningland (The Part Where You Let Go isn't on it, but The Fire Thief and their cover of Jackson are simply stunning). I should definitely be on commission!

  6. An interesting selection Si - I suspect that your brother, mother and father would come up with quite different lists. I hadn't come across the England 2 Columbia 0 song by Kirstie McCall before (on Dark Puss's list)- or indeed any of yours except the last. I'll get in touch with Cornflower to see if I can have a letter!

  8. I agree with OV, a very interesting selection, but like her I've only heard the last one. I love music in all forms, I just don't keep up with music anymore like I do books. So "modern" for me is the last decade that I did keep up with which would have been the 80's- gasp - plus things my dh shares with me. (He keeps up much better, but he has a daily commute each day to listen which I don't have.)

    Thanks for the fun post!

  10. Dad - yes, we might cross over on the last one, though? You've at least heard *of* most of these, haven't you? Certainly ole Tori Amos... can't imagine you'd like her though...

Peter - ah! Thanks. Wrong tracklisting on iTunes...

Susan - my brother is always chastising me for only liking recent music, but to be honest I tend to have it as a background for reading, and not much else...

Jenners - let us know if you give the meme a go!
