It was a fun novel--amusing and gently ironic. I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved the literary bits--the send up of high brow London society. You made me curious about Women, Privacy and Modernity, so I have just ILL'd it along with a bio of RM and her book of essays--Personal Pleasures. Hope you can join in on our discussion. Have you read more of her work since this post?Daniellehttp://www.danitorres.typepad.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-54663194628447010092009-12-08T18:21:15.295+00:002009-12-08T18:21:15.295+00:00I find most blurbs on the back of Rose M books off...I find most blurbs on the back of Rose M books off putting, It's great to read a review which makes me want to read one of her books, like you I have several all unread, including 'Told By An Idiot'Desperate Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15708411387912078122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-65991295246914251262009-12-08T09:40:37.416+00:002009-12-08T09:40:37.416+00:00Another vote for The Towers of Trebizond - I do th...Another vote for The Towers of Trebizond - I do think it is a bit of a Marmite book though. The Anglican references and clergy are a major theme and handled humourously and beautifully and she is really quite 'universal' in the points she makes about religious institutions and personal belief. It is superb. One of my top fifty novels I think. It is a novel which covers themes of guilt and unrequited love and also hilarious but simultaneously moving commentary on the role of the Anglican church in the world and in personal life. It's melancholic and quirky, but is also poignant in its exploration of love, doubt and belief.Anonymoushttp://a-shelf-of-ones-own.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-41961442240780327642009-12-07T11:22:05.076+00:002009-12-07T11:22:05.076+00:00I enjoyed this too.
