Henri Barbusse's Under Fire was written while the war was still going on which I thought would be fascinating, but his writing style just didn't do it for me.Thomas Hogglestockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14284352537015457974noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-49655804830049215112013-08-18T13:28:54.553+01:002013-08-18T13:28:54.553+01:00Yes, it's always surprised me why it wasn'...Yes, it's always surprised me why it wasn't better known in the English-speaking world, until of course I realised that they were fighting on the 'wrong side', so to speak. But, as you say, it is about the experience of war for the common soldier, which is so similar regardless of whom you are fighting for or against. I've also recently read 'The Long Engagement' by Sebastien Japrisot about the French experience of WW1, which was also interesting, although very different.Marina Sofiahttp://findingtimetowrite.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-67430395252681882932013-08-16T15:55:00.115+01:002013-08-16T15:55:00.115+01:00Let me know what you think if you do! The books are both wonderfully-written and quite bold in their descriptions of the carnage but their differing attitudes towards the war make for a fascinating contrast, as does the difference between the forms used and the authors' experiences: a novel by Remarque, who spent only a couple of months at the front lines, and a memoir by Juenger, who fought from 1915 until the end.
