You are right, that Green does melancholia very, very well. The Quiet American, The Heart of the Matter and The Power and the Glory also have tinges of this sandness and regret. So maybe it is best not to read too many in a row. ;) Ruthiellahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03871834571645928819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-56400403981530084752013-11-11T17:41:55.517+00:002013-11-11T17:41:55.517+00:00Excellent review Simon - I was a little underwhelm...Excellent review Simon - I was a little underwhelmed when I read this, but I may have had preconceptions and I think I need to approach the book again with a more open mind since I've loved everything else by Greene that I've picked up. I felt the Parkis scenes were clunky when I first read it but now accept your perspective.

It is an amazing book but one I admire rather than love. I prefer The Heart of the Matter when it comes to Greene on failing marriages. But in the end I just love Graham Greene! So varied, and managing to combine bleakness and humour and the delicate and the brutal - I think he gets the closest to emotional real life than anyone other than Shakespeare (writing in English).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
