It always reminds me a worrying amount of my home life, but at least it succeeds in making no heating seem distinctly more glamorous! I think I'll have to find it in the university library and reread it as a post-essay treat!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-7966968699516157862011-06-13T14:20:33.625+01:002011-06-13T14:20:33.625+01:00My mother loved and regularly recommended this boo...My mother loved and regularly recommended this book but I have never "got" it. It feels like the sort of book that I should like but maybe I'm imputing different motivations to the characters or something because - despite at least three attempts over the years - I don't really like the characters and what they do to each other or the overall story. Sorry.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-41679053953240695442011-06-10T15:51:23.354+01:002011-06-10T15:51:23.354+01:00Wait - you haven't read Brideshead Revisited?!...Wait - you haven't read Brideshead Revisited?! Simon! I am shocked and appalled. You'll love it! Read it!

Lovely post on I Capture the Castle - I adore the book AND the film - Romola Garai was an excellent Cassandra and I must watch it again very soon. I can't watch British films while I'm here because they send me into waves of nostalgia and have me craving food I can't get hold of!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-82700170444908067822011-06-09T23:03:22.642+01:002011-06-09T23:03:22.642+01:00I loved this book, and think it's due a re-rea...I loved this book, and think it's due a re-read, despite only reading it a year or so ago. Recommended it to a friend, who was not happy that she had been missing this amazing book for most of her life. An instant favourite.

As for diary-style books... Off the top of my head, I can think of Color Purple and Flowers for Algernon. The latter, I think, was incredibly touching and the book/story just had be pensive for an extremely long time.anothercookiecrumbleshttp://www.anothercookiecrumbles.co.uknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-89159382940939147902011-06-09T14:15:46.413+01:002011-06-09T14:15:46.413+01:00I forgot to mention, I found Brideshead to be very...I forgot to mention, I found Brideshead to be very different from most of the other Waugh I've read -- I actually prefer his satire. I especially liked the character of Topaz -- it was so refreshing to find a literary stepmother that wasn't evil!Karen K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13483190930383406559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-82184272390576222262011-06-09T12:27:04.001+01:002011-06-09T12:27:04.001+01:00I loved both the book and the film.
