I too was impatient at first, I thought they were going to be just another standard-novel-pair of annoyingly passive woman and just-annoying male, but she really transcended that. I'm womdering if you find the ending consistent with the rest of the novel's take on romance and/vs. marriage.drpjrwalshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13231765940496821474noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-21228048746013938472010-02-08T00:08:00.565+00:002010-02-08T00:08:00.565+00:00Hi Simon

I started reading ET late last year and have only read 'In a Summer Season' (brilliant ET introduction for me) and 'A View of the Harbour'. Prior to that I watched 'Mrs Palfrey' and I am so impressed with her writing and sharp observations of human behaviour and folly. This is another gem of an author that I have discovered thanks to great book bloggers like yourself.<br />Loved that "meat" quote :-)Cristina (Rochester Reader)https://www.blogger.com/profile/11157196972931051576noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-56834073521592118702010-02-07T19:04:39.742+00:002010-02-07T19:04:39.742+00:00What a wonderful image, that definitely captures h...What a wonderful image, that definitely captures her subtlety.StuckInABookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10017836017530130716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-74770799865707528152010-02-07T18:59:52.699+00:002010-02-07T18:59:52.699+00:00I agree with you a bit about Elizabeth Taylor: sh...I agree with you a bit about Elizabeth Taylor: she has her seeming longeurs but if one pays careful attention she always (or almost always) repays that attention with a scrupulous look at the vagaries of the human. She's a bit like a magnificent water-colourist hung adjacent to huge but mediocre oils. From the handful of Elizabeth Taylors I've read, I think her writing is really up there with the best and am baffled that she didn't quite make it out of that 'middlebrow' categorisation used in her day... Really I would just as soon enjoy her as Elizabeth Bowen say.
