And I definitely will read Mrs. 'Arris, and Jennie, and I know I will love them both...

Susan - I even have two copies of Mrs. Harris, so no excuse for not reading! I'm glad I don't have to fit in sports as well as reading... but I am a soap opera addict, and that takes up plenty of hours in the week!

Harriet - I think you should revisit it - it would only take about an hour! Let me know if you want to borrow, once it's come back from Claire.

Bee - I didn't! Thanks. If I can forgive Mr. Wright his Pride and Prejudice film, then maybe I'd consider him for director ;)
And I know of Nella Larsen, but haven't read anything by her - I don't think I even own anything by her. I'll definitely buy either of those if I stumble across them.

Rosie H - I'm surprised that noone has said that here, actually! It is a little difficult to stomach, for a moment or two, but I think that's where the fairy-tale element comes in. In real life you'd tell Mouche to run a mile, preferably to the nearest police station - but in the novel it works.StuckInABookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10017836017530130716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-21556227444551775262011-03-15T11:09:12.937+00:002011-03-15T11:09:12.937+00:00I have loved this book for years, ever since findi...I have loved this book for years, ever since finding a copy while helping to clear the shelves of a family friend who had just died. (It's your last image, by the way.) I mentioned to a friend the other day how wonderful I thought it was, and she looked at me in horror and said, "But she falls in love with the man who rapes her!" True. But different perspectives.Rosie Hnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-91882914664472901662011-03-15T10:49:57.189+00:002011-03-15T10:49:57.189+00:00By any chance did you catch the story about the Li...By any chance did you catch the story about the Little Angel puppet theatre in this past Saturday's Guardian? Joe Wright's family owned it, and he has spoken at some length about how it impacted his creativity and the way he presents stories. Perhaps he could make this film if Tim Burton is otherwise occupied? (Although I agree that the story has a Burtonesque edge to it; reminded me some of E. Scissorhands in its cruelty.)

I've only "known" you for 48 hours, and I can see that you will be adding stacks of books to my already groaning to-read shelf.

One more thing: Have you heard of Nella Larsen? She was an American writer loosely associated with the Harlem Renaissance. I wrote my Master's Thesis on her two novellas: Quicksand and Passing.Beehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02375981493145612394noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-27618089333365967132011-03-15T07:31:30.187+00:002011-03-15T07:31:30.187+00:00I read this when I was a teenager but your review ...I read this when I was a teenager but your review makes me wonder what I made of it then. And I, like you, have the Mrs. Harris books on my TBR shelf. Your review of the 'Seven Dolls has got me intrigued. I will have to be on the look out for it - and I do love the variety of covers. :) I didn't finish any other books over the weekend - I got about 1/2 way through Jane and the Madness of Lord Byron by Stephanie Barron (and I'm itching to get back to it :) ). College basketball derailed my reading Saturday night, as did church and other activities Sunday. It's so hard being a sports fan and a book lover! That said, I'm not ready to give up either. ;)Susan in TXhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09550766549670690646noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-15455449628356713522011-03-15T01:14:17.350+00:002011-03-15T01:14:17.350+00:00In high school, I was in the chorus for a musical ...In high school, I was in the chorus for a musical version of "Lili." It was magical. Finding the book years later reminded me of that, and I've always loved it. You should definitely move "Mrs 'Arris" up your TBR list, by the way.Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17782561487396697870noreply@blogger.com
