I love Warner, I love Maxwell, and I love their affection for one another. I don't know how I'm ever going to write a coherent review when I come to the end.Claire (The Captive Reader)https://www.blogger.com/profile/07430380065718826213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-4430551351727878862011-12-16T07:54:56.802+00:002011-12-16T07:54:56.802+00:00Great review, Simon. There is a volume of STW's letters to her cousin available from the STW Society which I don't have yet and if Father Christmas doesn't bring them I may well treat myself.Tanya Izzardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05229305256800572696noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-5996946242861358512011-12-14T13:19:36.659+00:002011-12-14T13:19:36.659+00:00I read a volume of the letters between William Max...I read a volume of the letters between William Maxwell and Eudora Welty.
British Foodmondalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07246504680051766052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-25316872445668632552011-12-14T11:58:06.267+00:002011-12-14T11:58:06.267+00:00Nancy - I have been intending to visit the Dorset ...Nancy - I have been intending to visit the Dorset County Museum, since it's not far from home in Somerset. I shan't be visiting Texas any time soon, I don't think!

Audrey - lovely! I suspect I would. Onto the wishlist it goes...

Claire - so pleased, and surprised, that your library has a copy! I read it gradually over a few months, so I don't know how it would feel in one go, but I can't imagine it would ever be bad. Hope you love it!

Mary - I absolutely think great letter writers can be enjoyed, regardless of how one responds to their fiction. Hope someone spots the hint!

Helen - good good :) Kingdoms of Elfin is only one book - it was a series of stories published in the New Yorker, some of which (maybe all?) were compiled in the book you have. I haven't read any, actually...

Daniel - nothing beats a letter through the door - I have a couple of friends I exchange letters with, and it's lovely having them all in a box. So much nicer than emails. And I'd love to receive a letter from you!
The Nancy Mitford/Heyford Hill letters were actually my first ever taste of the Mitfords - agree, they're wonderful.

Susan - hope you enjoy the collection! I don't know what will happen when the 50 is over... I've slowed down a lot, since I first started, in an effort not to get to the end too quickly... maybe it will hover on 49 for years and years!StuckInABookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10017836017530130716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-56778440024457351842011-12-13T20:53:39.769+00:002011-12-13T20:53:39.769+00:00I'm with Claire - I've never read anything...I'm with Claire - I've never read anything by either, but I do love to read letters and this type of book, so I will add it to my list of things to seek out. Don't you just love correspondences? I sometimes wish I could print out all the emails I've ever sent to some friends and acquaintances and see what I come up with. It's a pity we don't write letters anymore, how will we ever be able to look back on these lovely relationships we've made without physical proof? On that note (no pun intended), I think I'll send you a letter!

Have you ever read the letters of Nancy Mitford and Heywood Hill? Gorgeous, witty, moving! If you haven't, please look them up!DMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15435206223622005832noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-31929032932954206162011-12-13T19:16:36.338+00:002011-12-13T19:16:36.338+00:00This sounds lovely, you have convinced me!

I didn't get on at all well with the only novel of Warner's that I've ever read but maybe I should give her another chance, as anybody who has Maxwell's approval has to be good. I've never read anything by either of these authors (I know, I know, that needs to be remedied) and know very little about their lives but I now desperately feel the need to read their letters. My appetite for books of correspondence is much greater than my appetite for novels and immense compared to my taste for short stories! And, unbelievably, my library has a copy - clearly, a sign that I must read this and soon!Claire (The Captive Reader)https://www.blogger.com/profile/07430380065718826213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-5226291297428813562011-12-13T02:10:44.479+00:002011-12-13T02:10:44.479+00:00Simon, earlier this year I read a volume of the le...Simon, earlier this year I read a volume of the letters between William Maxwell and Eudora Welty, and it was one of the most wonderful books I've read in a long time.
