I don't know, it just didn't touch me or move me in any way. I loved that quote about the hurdles, though. How did it go, again?

“And I wondered if hurdlers ever thought, you know, 'This would go faster if we just got rid of the hurdles.'”Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05898930371947572580noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-23559358442522585172013-11-30T09:23:35.467+00:002013-11-30T09:23:35.467+00:00I fall between two stools here, not being able to ...I fall between two stools here, not being able to empathise entirely with Hazel or her parents - so I went with the narrative focus, but maybe I would have seen a different narrative focus if I were a parent.

Good point at the end of your comment. I do agree - I just get a bit annoyed when some readers imply that all adult fiction is empty of the big issues.StuckInABookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10017836017530130716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-77092982626174821382013-11-30T09:22:03.045+00:002013-11-30T09:22:03.045+00:00Wonderful comment, Claire! I.e. the period I love most - between the world wars - didn't really have anything between children's books and adults' books, so I'm a bit of a loss to categorise it in my head!StuckInABookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10017836017530130716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-30447188663200539122013-11-30T09:19:52.939+00:002013-11-30T09:19:52.939+00:00I'm intrigued by your first sentence, Annabel,...I'm intrigued by your first sentence, Annabel, and I don't know if I agree with it or not - I genuinely can't make up my mind! Because I wouldn't read a 'children's first story book' (or similar) however well written it was - where should the line be drawn? Don't know. But I hope you and your daughter both enjoy John Green! I do think you'd enjoy their Youtube channel.StuckInABookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10017836017530130716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-16861163458073495902013-11-30T09:18:45.098+00:002013-11-30T09:18:45.098+00:00I was a bit confused for a minute!!I was a bit confused for a minute!!StuckInABookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10017836017530130716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-82940601099369443972013-11-30T09:18:32.341+00:002013-11-30T09:18:32.341+00:00It's so true! The big questions are all across the board - framed in different ways for different readers, but readers should be able to move from one to the other, or at least a mixed diet.StuckInABookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10017836017530130716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-43156231627620913582013-11-28T23:10:00.880+00:002013-11-28T23:10:00.880+00:00Alas I have never read any Sweet Valley High, my l...Alas I have never read any Sweet Valley High, my loss : ) and I typically don’t read YA titles. But I did read The Fault in our Stars. I liked it, but I think it shows my age that I was more moved by the empathy I felt for Hazel’s parents than by Hazel and Gus’ romance. I both agree and disagree with you however when you say “People often say something along the lines that it "deals with issues that adult novels wouldn't cover", which simply isn't true, since adult novels cover pretty much everything between them.” YA may cover the same issues, but the perspective is different. Love, mortality, heartbreak, friendship etc. are processed differently at 15 than at 45.Ruthiellahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03871834571645928819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-42983551334687114162013-11-28T03:46:32.053+00:002013-11-28T03:46:32.053+00:00Todd!!! Yes, it's about love, but it's also about loss and pain ( physical and psychic) and anger and life in general as the characters deal with issues of life in some ways far beyond their abilities to. In "library-ease" its consider a YA book ( young adult) which simply means that the book is suitable for tweens and up. Some of the best contemporary fiction ( and, the worst) I have ever read is classified YA.Andrea S.http://facebook.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-45613397002357940082013-11-27T18:03:50.448+00:002013-11-27T18:03:50.448+00:00Good writing is worth reading, whomever the main t...Good writing is worth reading, whomever the main target audience is - that is the main reason I read some teenagers' books alongside grown-up fare. It was so, so lovely and I think lots of adults would do well to read it and remember some basic but profound moral truths. Am with you, though, on the agile joint adult thing. As a teacher I am always hoping that my kids will read at least some 'adult' books. All the big questions kids have are the ones in adult books anyway: love, death, sex, God, not God, war, fear, identity... KLQnoreply@blogger.com
