The surprise was my 11 yo son who picked it up and giggled his way through it. He will still "out of the blue" toss out a quote from the book and set the whole tribe off into a fit of giggles. Sounds like this one would be a good stocking stuffer. :)Susan in TXhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09550766549670690646noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-45696914201974111122012-12-05T10:57:33.042+00:002012-12-05T10:57:33.042+00:00Many thanks for the mention, Simon! Yes, the book ...Many thanks for the mention, Simon! Yes, the book does rely on cultural stereotypes, but Jerome did greatly admire German culture and their love of order. He lived in Germany before he wrote the book and seems to have thoroughly enjoyed himself. My favourite quote from 'Bummel' is:

"In a German park I have seen a gardener step gingerly with felt boots
on to a grass-plot, and removing therefrom a beetle, place it gravely
but firmly on the gravel; which done, he stood sternly watching the
beetle, to see that it did not try to get back on the grass; and the
beetle, looking utterly ashamed of itself, walked hurriedly down the
gutter, and turned up the path marked ‘Ausgang’."
Catherine Popehttp://www.victoriansecrets.co.uknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-54293243516087012482012-12-05T10:07:20.898+00:002012-12-05T10:07:20.898+00:00It's so long since I last read these Simon, bu...It's so long since I last read these Simon, but now you've made me want to revisit them instantly!
