I like that..."fantastic-but-not-fantasy"<br /><br />I like that description; captures the book well, I think.David Hhttp://davidhblog.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-30900139767724138602011-10-06T16:12:49.383+01:002011-10-06T16:12:49.383+01:00I'm curious! I'm ok with fantasy (and fantastic) novels, but for me AiWL was a surrealist work. Carroll might have been in control, but the feeling I got was that *anything* could happen, no rules applied, and that put me off the book.Alex (The Sleepless Reader)https://www.blogger.com/profile/03083761152675156469noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-66613937623275862772011-10-06T07:12:59.942+01:002011-10-06T07:12:59.942+01:00I'm not sure that writers are always in contro...I'm not sure that writers are always in control - they may have the final say, but when I am writing I find that The Writing can take on a life of its own. In 'The Fantastic' I reckon this is an even greater likelihood. And once something is written down it is not always easy to cut it out - it becomes too connected to the whole.<br />Hilary Mantel recently talked about the ruthless cuts she makes to her work. Having come to grief on Wolf Hall I can't decide whether she tore out vital connections or whether the whole thing was sooooo huge that it was going to fall apart anyway (sorry Mann Booker - my book group decided the 'the king is in the all-together'!!!)ovwnoreply@blogger.com
