The gradual transformation of her spirit/soul (it's the bodily transformation that's immediate) reminds a bit of Rice's Interview with a Vampire, where the transformation from human to vampire, takes a bit of time.(True confession, I never really took to the Rice book, but my husband loves it).
Getting back to Gallico - some of him (MRS HARRIS) reminds me a bit of Margery Sharp. Both "middlebrow" authors, neither pulp nor high lit; very insightful polished social comedy, gentle and intelligent, with a real gift for a telling phrase. Both also had successes with younger reader, animal-centered books - Miss BIanca, The Rescuers, and Gallico's Thomasina Jennie etc.
Of Gallico, I've read Snow Goose and Small Miracle, Have ordered Jennie, and Love of Seven Dolls - very curious about it, and Mrs HArris goes to Paris. (So varied a career as you say).
ENM
PS Have you ever tried Flannery O'Connor? Southern USA writer - not sure how well known in the UK. It is like whiskey neat - a unique voice, and darkly comic. I didn't entirely love Jennie, despite my love of cats - although I obviously adore all cats, in fiction I want them to be cross and superior, rather than fey.StuckInABookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10017836017530130716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-15894634979710569542013-05-01T22:26:08.472+01:002013-05-01T22:26:08.472+01:00He is definitely an odd one! I agree with your comments, Simon. He did have a huge range of styles, and occasionally seemed to be attempting multiple things where one would have sufficed quite well. I love some of his tales, am rather disturbed by others, and have quite literally tossed several away in disappointment. But he's always worthy of exploration; one can't dismiss him as when he's on the mark he's very good indeed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-88325480776440732232013-04-19T15:15:23.147+01:002013-04-19T15:15:23.147+01:00Oh! Apart from the Mrs. Harris books and The Poseidon Adventure (which I did read a *very* long time ago) I have Love of Seven Dolls on the tbr - not sure how I will respond to that. Methinks Gallico is a bit of a one-off!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-446727280609751914.post-52135028787275596092013-04-18T08:32:01.868+01:002013-04-18T08:32:01.868+01:00Have you read 'The Man Who Was Magic'? This was the Gallico book I always read to my Year 6 class because while it has a fairy tale setting and a thumping good moral at the end it also has considerable spiritual overtones which got them thinking rather more deeply than might otherwise have been the case. If you can find a copy I recommend it.Alexhttp://thinkinginfragments.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.com
